Apple Crumble

Isn’t warm Apple Crumble on a freezing day one of the best comfort foods to go to? It helps to shed some of the guilt off because of the fruit. A warm feeling topped with a dollop of good quality vanilla ice cream is perfection for me. So going straight back to Singapore, my Uncle’s housekeeper would make the best Apple Crumble. The apples would be a cooked perfectly brown and the crumble was nice and crunchy. I was never able to take the recipe from her, and so it took me YEARS to finally make it just as well as she does. It really boils down to the crumble essentially. In my search to find the perfect crumble for me I have learned there are two types of toppings, the soft kind which will crumble, hence the name Apple Crumble, and then the crunchy kind, Apple Crisp. It’s essentially the same thing; it’s called Apple Crumble in the UK and Apple Crisp in the US. I like my toppings nice and crisp so after years of making Apple Crumble with a crumbly topping I have finally succeeded in getting around to the perfect crunch. It was just a matter of the amount of butter that was added. So here it is.

Ingredients:
6 apples
6 tbsp sugar
1 tsp cinamion
6 tsp butter
2 tbsp water

Peel and slice apples into a pot. Combine sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over apples. Dot with 2 tsp of the butter. Stir well together so the apples are coated well and let it cook with 2 tbsp of water until the apples are soft

Crumble Topping:
1/2 cup flour
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
6 tbsp cold butter
1/3 cup oatsInstructions:
Put all the topping ingredients into a food processor and let it come together coarsely. Do not let the crumble become a paste.

  1. Preheat oven to 180 C
  2. Once the apples are cooked place in a baking dish and cover with the crumble
  3. Bake in the oven until the crumble comes together and is browned at the top. Approximately 20 minutes
  4. The crumble will be hard when you tap it, which means it is perfect.
